Bournville BookFest is run by Busy Parents Network. We organise festivals which draw families together and introduce children to the amazing power of the creative arts.

Director Sarah Mullen launched Bournville BookFest in 2014 on a shoestring budget and no experience of running a literature festival. She won a £2000 Vision award from Bournville Village Trust to run a really high-quality children's book festival, which was also unstuffy and accessible.

Five years later, it's one of the biggest children's book festivals in the UK and Birmingham's only dedicated book festival for 0-12s.

This year we're looking to sell almost 10,000 tickets over 10 days.

It's not just about books, but storytelling in every form. We have Hungry Caterpillar animation sessions, pre-schoolers' days, story walks, David Walliams drama, singing, paper engineering, writing workshops, comics and interactive draw-alongs. There really is something for everyone!

How we are funded

Busy Parents Network is a not-for-profit social enterprise based at Bournville Community Hub, which we also run for the community.

We keep our prices low and use venues across the city, so they're easy to get to. We have free library sessions, free Special Educational Needs sessions at the modern new Sense premises at Touchbase Pears, and a new Schools' Programme, so we can reach more children than ever before. And we're 100% committed to running BookFest on not-for-profit lines, and to paying all authors, artists and performers properly.

We couldn't do all this without funding from Arts Council England and private sponsorship - or the generosity of our Venue Partners, who largely let us use their venues free of charge.

As our grant funding has decreased this year, for the first time we have introduced a £1 charge for parents and grandparents for our big venue events, to help us cover our costs. We're sure you'll agree £1 is still spectacular value for money, which you wouldn't find anywhere else! And we're opening pop-up bookstores at Bournville Community Hub and at our main BookFest venues Rowheath Pavilion and The Blue Coat School - all profits generated will go directly to the author and contribute to the BookFest budget . So we would be very grateful if you would support us by buying books from us rather than online - it will help us continue running BookFest for future years and make a huge social impact on the city.

Finally, if you are bringing along older children, then babes-in-arms are free. If they are coming to one of our pre-schoolers events, then we hope you understand they will need a ticket.

We hope you have a wonderful time at Bournville BookFest - you're guaranteed a warm welcome!
